Fissure sealants are similar to white fillings in your teeth, but they help prevent the need for fillings in the future.
Tooth fissures are deep pits and grooves in the surface of a tooth. Teeth can have very deep fissures, especially in children. These fissures are very narrow, making them difficult to clean by simply brushing your teeth, which means they can often lead to cavities in your molars. This often causes tooth decay in children’s back teeth.
A fissure sealant is a plastic coating that we use to fill in your tooth fissures to prevent food and bacteria from getting stuck in them and causing decay within the tooth.
Once a child’s permanent back teeth come through, they are able to have fissure sealants done to protect them against decay. We recommend doing this as early as possible, so they don’t need fillings in their teen years!
To remove those stains and plaque from your teeth, we spray and clean them with a combination of compressed air, water and fine powder.
We can also use this technique to gently clean underneath the gum line and around any implants and fillings.
When applying a fissure sealant, we always start by cleaning the tooth. Next, we apply the liquid sealant. We then leave it to set, and that’s it!
The treatment is pain-free, and your teeth will feel normal afterwards.
Fissure sealants are an NHS Band 1 dental treatment. Our private pricing for this service is £50.
